On Spiritual Decision Making
e’ve had a lot of people ask us what made us decide to move to Nashville, a city neither of us had ever been to. Our answer might surprise you: We wanted to.
Monday’s words are worth repeating: It’s easy to over-spiritualize God’s will for our lives. It’s easy to assume that our desires automatically run counter to His. It’s easy to pray in circles, almost as if we’re waiting for a banner in the sky to give us the next right step.
The truth is, God has already revealed the majority of His will in the Bible:
God’s will is that people will be saved (1 Timothy 2:4)
God’s will is that people will be filled with the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19)
God’s will is that people be pure (1 Thessalonians 4:3)
God’s will is that people submit to proper authority (1 Peter 2:18)
And no matter what we do, God’s will is that we do it for His glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Sometimes that looks like a specific city or job or relationship. Most times it looks like seeking wisdom, trusting the Holy Spirit, and having the freedom to choose.
God was still God when He created you. If you assume His will is counter to the natural desires He’s given you, you’re likely never going to find it and you’re probably going to burn out trying. He created you just the way you are on purpose, and if you live a Godly life, you can trust that He will give you Godly desires.
So pray. Study God’s Word. Seek wise counsel. And then? Enjoy the freedom to do the things you want to do. For the glory of God and the good of others.
Amen?
