On Hope in the Church

“How do you still have hope in the Church?”

I’m sure Twitter wasn’t the answer she was expecting, but it’s the truth. When I was at my wit’s end with the state of the American church, it was fellow Believers on social media that reminded me it doesn’t have to be this way. That God is still at work. Even here.

“How do you make friends in a new city in the middle of a pandemic?”

Bumble BFF definitely wasn’t the answer I was expecting, but sitting across the table from my new friend Julie, talking about missions and mobilization, I got goosebumps thinking about the Lord’s faithfulness.

And that’s just it: He is faithful to use every mundane thing, if we’ll let Him.

I think sometimes we miss out because we’re expecting God to speak to us in some extravagant display. We miss out because we’re looking for Him in the wind or the fire, instead of inviting Him to speak to us with a whisper (1 Kings 19:11-12).

I think we forget to take Him at His word when He says He is before all things and in Him, all things hold together (Colossians 1:15-18). When He says that He will use ALL of it for His glory and our good (Romans 8:28).

I think He just wants us to invite Him to.

Even after I prayed and swiped right, I still doubted that the Lord could use something as silly as Bumble BFF for my good. But He did, and He can do it for you, too.

Today, let Twitter and Bumble BFF be your reminder that there is nothing too small or too silly to be used for the glory of God. Invite Him into all of it and watch in awe of the faithfulness He’s promised you (Hebrews 10:23).
